Math & Computer Science Alumni Meeting

The Math and Computer Science Alumni Council held its meeting on Thursday, December 4, 2025, from 12:30–2:00 PM in HWH 304H. The meeting brought together faculty, alumni, community college partners, and community leaders to discuss program updates, enrollment trends, and future collaboration opportunities.

The meeting opened with introductions, followed by an update on higher education at the state level. Dr. Hrozencik shared encouraging news regarding enrollment growth across Illinois, noting increases at both four-year universities and community colleges. He also discussed the current status of the public university funding formula and potential changes anticipated in the coming years.

Departmental updates highlighted positive momentum at ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø. Enrollment has increased for Fall 2025, with projections indicating continued growth for Spring 2026 and Fall 2026. Recent improvements in departmental infrastructure were also discussed, including new classroom and lab technology such as large interactive displays and 3D printers, enhancing hands-on learning opportunities for students.

Dr. Mohammad Abdus Salam, Professor and Chairman of the CIMST Department, shared updates on new and revised academic programs within the department. These included the reopening of the mathematics program with a redesigned curriculum, proposed enhancements to the Computer Science program, and progress on the Ph.D. in Computing Sciences.

Community college partners emphasized the importance of strengthening transfer pathways. Participants discussed the value of visiting community colleges to share program updates and better inform prospective transfer students. The development of a clear transfer guide, hosted on the ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø website, was identified as a key step to help students understand degree requirements and transition smoothly into Math and Computer Science programs at ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø.

Faculty members expressed willingness to engage directly with community college students through guest lectures and presentations on real-world applications of mathematics and computer science, including data science, game theory, biology, sports analytics, and emerging technologies.

Community engagement was also a central theme. The importance of partnering with nonprofit organizations was discussed to expand opportunities and strengthen ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s community presence. Enthusiasm surrounding the return of football at ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø was noted as a potential driver for increased student interest and community excitement.

The meeting concluded with agreement to continue the dialogue and reconvene in Spring 2026, reinforcing the department’s commitment to collaboration, enrollment growth, and student success.
